About Dorothy
Dorothy Hodge is privileged to be a nationally Certified American Sign Language Interpreter, certified by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID), which is a national membership organization of professionals who provide sign language interpreting/transliterating services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing persons.
Dorothy draws her competencies from strong foundations in education and myriad trainings that are specifically focused on bilingual/bicultural interpreting for persons in the Deaf Community. After earning a BA in Psychology, she enrolled in the Northeastern University Interpreter Training Program in Boston, Massachusetts, where she earned a University College Certificate in Deaf Studies and a University College Certificate in American Sign Language/English Interpreting. Dorothy's desire to specialize in legal and mental health venues prompted her to pursue legal interpreter training. She initially engaged in fifteen credit hours of coursework in the "Interpreting in the American Legal System," offered at the Distance Opportunities for Interpreter Training (DO IT Center) at the University of Northern Colorado, and decided to culminate her ongoing professional development in the legal and mental health arenas by earning a Master of Science in Law.
Dorothy holds herself to a rigorous standard of professionalism and conceptually accurate interpretations guided by the teachings of Interpreter experts and pioneers, such as Kellie Stewart, Anna Witter-Merithew, Carla Mathers, Betty Colonomos, and Dennis Cokely. When conveying 'Deaf-Centered' meanings and culturally rich realities unique to the Deaf Community in her interpretations, she bridges two different linguistic and cultural communities.
